Meet Our Chief Pilot, Explore Our Safari Flight & More

Posted on Wed July 22, 2026.

Winter has arrived on the Highveld, bringing with it some of the year's most reliable flying conditions. Clear skies, cool mornings and far-reaching views make it a season our pilots look forward to - and one many of our guests remember long after their flight.
In this edition, we're introducing one of the people behind those memorable mornings, Chief Pilot Japie Leipoldt, as he celebrates ten years with AirVentures. We'll also share why winter is such a rewarding time to fly and how our Safari Flight can be seamlessly incorporated into your clients' South African itineraries.

Meet Our Chief Pilot – Japie Leipoldt

Behind every unforgettable flight is a team dedicated to delivering the safest and most memorable experience possible.
This year marks ten years since Chief Pilot Japie Leipoldt joined AirVentures.
With thousands of hours in the air, Japie oversees every aspect of our flying operations and also heads our Aircraft Maintenance Organisation, ensuring our fleet is maintained to the highest standards.
His calm professionalism, extensive knowledge and passion for ballooning have helped create memorable experiences for guests from around the world.
Whether he's conducting pre-flight inspections before sunrise or sharing stories after landing, Japie's commitment to safety and excellence is at the heart of every AirVentures flight.

Why We Love Flying in Winter

Spend a few minutes talking to our Chief Pilot, Japie, and you'll quickly discover why winter is one of his favourite times of year to fly.

The mornings begin crisp and clear, with frost across the grass and the landscape slowly coming to life as the sun rises. From the balloon, guests watch the changing light reveal the rivers, ridges and open bushveld of the Cradle of Humankind, with the cool, dry winter air often providing exceptional visibility across the landscape.
Winter also brings calm, stable flying conditions, making for beautifully smooth flights and some of our clearest views of the year.
It's no coincidence that winter is a favourite among our pilots. The combination of crisp mornings, remarkable visibility and gentle flying conditions creates the kind of morning that stays with guests long after they've landed.

Discover Our Safari Flight

We've refined our offering to focus on the experience that resonates most with our guests.
Our Safari Flight takes passengers beyond the Cradle of Humankind and over private game reserves, where the bushveld unfolds beneath them from a perspective that's impossible to experience on the ground. Depending on the morning, guests may drift over rhino, giraffe, zebra, antelope and other plains game as the first light reveals the landscape below.
The experience continues after landing with a sparkling wine celebration, followed by a leisurely breakfast at a five-star Lodge. It's an opportunity for guests to reflect on the morning before continuing their journey or exploring more of the Cradle of Humankind.
For travel agents, the Safari Flight is more than just another excursion. It combines wildlife, aviation and exceptional hospitality into a seamless morning experience that's easy to incorporate into almost any Gauteng itinerary. It's the kind of experience guests consistently describe as one of the highlights of their South African journey.
